Cheap fix for bad slim drives

Swapping the circuit board was very easy and much cheaper than sending the Xbox to Mexico for four weeks and $120 to repair. The five wires that need to be de-soldered and re-soldered are right on the surface and cake for anyone with a little soldering experience. The board even has the wire colors printed next to each pad so you don’t screw it up. Remember to pull the foam door seal off when separating the two halves. Inserting a paperclip into the hole on the side will release the drive tray to give you a little working space. I didn’t want to chance just replacing the laser assembly after going through all the trouble of taking the Xbox apart, only to find the new part was faulty. This seemed like a more reliable solution. The hardest part was getting the stupid black tray bezel off the old drive to snap onto this one. The kids have been torturing the new drive for a week now and it works great.

This worked in my Xbox 360S. It is a 16D5S even though my original was a 16D4S, it worked fine. After swapping the cards it worked fine. Just be careful with the 3 ribbon connecters. The soldering for anybody who has done even minor work before should not be a big deal. It took about 45mins total.

Had to replace this drive with an identical one in my xbox 360. The drive worked perfectly after swapping the internal circuit board so that it paired up with my system. I have a fully function xbox again! Much cheaper than the alternative of either sending back to Microsoft of buying a new system. You do have to be handy with a soldering iron, though.

Check your product before you work with it

Cd Player came with a sealed sticker taped on two sides. Remember I have to to open it for the solder part. When I unpacked it, something was loose inside right away. I opened the cd player and find a plastic part falling right out on the table. Didn’t know to begin with, what it would do or what it was for. So I just kept going soldering the mainboard from the old cd-player into the new one. Put everything back together, turned on the x-box and voila……..cd-player won’t open!!!
Just what I need. So this is the part what was damaged? I dissembled the box again. Took the cd-player out. Soldered the board, Took the laser completely out and start using the housing of my old cd-player. Screwed laser in the old housing, soldered again, put everthing back together and …. voila CD-Player opened up…. thank god.
Since I had such a hassle I decided NOT to make a big deal out of it !!!
But,
be aware in case you order a cd-player:
be suspicious if it has to seal sticker on it, before you open it. You might end up with a damaged one. Shake it first. If you hear nothing, go for and do your thing. If something is loose inside this player. You might end up like I.
On the other hand. If I wouldn’t be so handy, it was a working product after all. I just couldn’t give to much stars, but appreciate the price
